- S :: Sinuous, sultry, selective, surprising, surreal.
- SSH :: WareLogging
- Saalon :: Writer/filmaker. Won't use the term auteur because it sounds pretentious at this moment.
- SadTech :: IdeaLogging. MarshallBrain. AssHattery about the HistoryOfTechnology.
- SageFrancis :: RequiredMusic
- SaintLouisMissouri :: PlaceLogging
- SalinaKansas :: <Brennen> PlaceLogging. Where I was born in 1981.
- SallieMae :: On reddit just now, a SallieMae ad: "Make room for life AND loans." Fuck you.
- SallyRand :: Sally Rand was a dancer.
- [Sally McLendon] :: <Brennen> TrackingAcademics, NativeAmericanHistory.
- SamBrownback :: <Brennen> Late January 2006, ''RollingStone'' carried a sort of hysterical smear piece on Brownback. Not exactly well-written, and the writer seems to know approximately jack about Kansas, but scary enough all the same.
- SamRoberts :: Music.
- SamWilliams :: TrackingWriters
- Samba :: WareLogging.
- SamuelTorreyOrton :: TrackingAcademics, TrackingWriters. HistoryOfLiteracy. Dyslexia, mixed-dominance, etc.
- SanFrancisco :: PlaceLogging
- SanFranciscoCalifornia :: PlaceLogging

- SansSerif :: Wow!! It's getting better and better. Keep it up man.,
- SapirWhorfHypothesis :: IdeaLogging.
- [Sarah McLendon] :: Misspell.
- SarantineMosaic :: BookLogging
- ScaryGoRound :: WebComics. www.scarygoround.com/
- ScavengingClass :: <Brennen> IdeaLogging: Would it be a good idea to define a kind of post-consumerist aesthetic? A manifesto for the scavenging class?
- SchooledToOrder :: Write something.
- ScienceFiction :: IdeaLogging, GenreFiction.
- ScienceIsNotEnough :: BookLogging, by VannevarBush.
- ScientificManagement :: IdeaLogging
- Scientology :: IdeaLogging. For all your Scientology information clearinghouse needs...
- ScorchedEarth :: A DOS TankGame.
- ScreenScraping :: Everyone uses RegEx to match and pull text out of web documents. This usually works but is painful and tends to produce collections of special cases rather than generalizing well. The 34th time you do it is nearly as much effort as the first, though by that time you hate yourself a lot more for it. Open question: Since HTML generally has enough structure to display, and since display appearance is often the targetted layer of structure (people tend to encode this kind of meaning for other people, not for machine readability), shouldn't there be a graceful way to do this from the browser?
- ScribusTemplates :: Places to find templates for Scribus, an open source desktop publishing package. I'm looking for a booklet template that would adapt well to printing a poetry chapbook or comic.
- SearchEngineOptimization :: IdeaLogging. ThingsWhichSuck. One of those fabulous terms which means precisely the opposite.
- SecondGreatAwakening :: IdeaLogging.
- SecureInternetLiveConferencing :: <Brennen> WareLogging.
- SecureSocketStuff :: <Brennen> WareLogging. Some resources on SSL certificates, utilities, &c.
- SeeAlso :: The WalaCode generates a little list on the side of each page which includes a set of links to search engines, wikis, and databases. It also sifts through all of the pages on the wala which contain links to the current page, and lists them. A primitive version of the two-way linking that "true hypertext" (SeeAlso TedNelson) was supposed to have.
- SelectedPoems :: BookLogging
- SelfPublishing :: Some possible options for having a book printed:
- SelleckHall :: PlaceLogging
- SemanticWeb :: IdeaLogging

- September 1 2007 :: Google did eventually do something about this, to their credit.
- September 21 2005 :: <CAEB> Ah, home.
- September 22 2009 :: <Molly> It's not that pathetic to have one's music collection made up only of Led Zeppelin albums. Of course, six years ago I would have said something entirely different.
- September 24 2006 :: <alan> i concur. as steve yegge likes to point out, the critical mistake was the decision to flatten lists. this means they can only hold scalars, never other lists, and you're stuck in flatland. in order to get out of flatland you have to somehow get a list into a scalar. the solution to this problem was to introduce references. you see by now the slippery slope we're on: now you have not only arrays, hashes, and lists, but references to arrays and hashes, and you need distinct syntax for addressing elements of each.
- September 24 2007 :: <caeb> This makes a bit more sense if you know that a Swiffer is one of the best spider-killing tools I've yet encountered.
- September 25 2004 ::
- September 25 2005 :: <Brent> This is odd but rather awesome. Is it the beginning of something?

- September 25 2007 :: RandQuotient
- September 26 2006 :: <caeb> i like. the ending particularly.
- September 26 2008 :: <Molly> 17 is pretty damn opaque.
- September 28 2006 :: AssHattery: Fuck you, Dan Simmons.
- September 28 2007 :: <Anonymous> hehe. This is Molly. I read it as "electric pacification" and thought, "My, how very Victorian, are we back to shocking the kiddies?" but upon reading that section again, I realise you're talking about TV, video games, computers, mobile phones...etc...heheh. my mind is all fuzzy and whatnot.
- September 29 2005 :: <Molly> what a nice portrait of Norbert. Thanks for the...uh...plug.
- September 29 2007 :: <Brent> Sorry to be annoying, but do you mean "email address = identity"? I thought you might be referring to physical mail addresses, which do tend to be tied to identity in logic-defying ways.
- September 29 2009 :: <Molly> It's like If You Give a Mouse a Cookie for renters.
- September 2 2008 :: <Jacob> you spin in circles without falling down. i enjoyed this piece quite a bit. i do not agree that hope and self-deception are the same thing though. hope is a faith projected into the future, while self-deception is false faith projected into the future.

- September 3 2003 :: just wondered if you called for Mom's birthday...
