Tracking Academics

<Brennen> This is a tag for pages I use to keep track of academics. (I worked for a while at an academic press, and needed to quickly associate authors & reviewers with their disciplines, publications, and institutions.) TrackingScholars might have been a better tag, but I think I can just use TrackingWriters where this one doesn't quite fit.

= stuff to remember =

It is not always easy to find people based only on the knowledge that they've authored a book or paper on a given topic. On the other hand, we live in the age of Google, which means that in relative terms this is cake. Most academics at major institutions are provided faculty web pages by their departments. Nearly all have email addresses.

It occurs to me that a lot of this stuff could actually be generalized to TrackingPeople.

Is the name spelled right? K or C? Variations on first name? Duplicate names? Middle initial? Jr. or Sr.?
Do you have access to a local contact database?
How about a hardcopy of some book with references in the back?
Don't forget Amazon.com.
