thursday, may 2

from a bus running north out of boulder

the sun, degrees above
the ridge of the mountains
casts a pale light

all things stand in sharp relief
against the husk of the day
and in the lengthening hours of middle spring,
these towns and roads
lie like some beach newly exposed
as the tide recedes
