i was thinking about a possible future where human cognitive abilities are extended directly with the eventual descendants of machine-learning systems, like the one that just got so good at chess in so little time as to prompt a wave of existential uncertainty last night when i read about it i got to thinking about a situation in which iterated simulation and inscrutable masses of statistical pattern are applied to any given situation -- but of course that's not so much unlike what a human mind does already the novel possibility is a mechanical acceleration; we're already loops and whorls and layers of accreted outcomes, pathways reinforced or faded out by signals amplified or dampened i thought: what happens when my mind prompts moral agent: sustains a subjectivity is there something that it's like to be a forest? a bird? a tree has moral standing, even if it's not a moral agent as such the cat on my lap
