the late afternoon
of the year gathers
around the town
where we live
bright leaves, the
varicolored grass
tangles of vegetative
debris in the ditches
the shaggy final
exuberance of
growth and flowering
into seed on warm
october days;
the ragged inroads
made by frost
and wind
